Y’all. This tax bill is so bad from so many angles, it’s actually fucking horrifying.

It will make the rich richer.

It favors big business w/ corp tax cuts, but that won’t lead to more employment as Republicans claim.

It discourages homeownership for the middle class which is another tactic to ensure the rich (landlords) keep getting richer.

It makes student loan debt more difficult.

It could make graduate studies only accessible to already very wealthy students.

It repeals state/local tax deductions and effectively penalizes people who live in states where there are higher taxes (and therefore states that tend to have more social safety nets and progressive voters.)

It’s predicted it will have a chilling effect on nonprofits and charity (which will mean an reduction is services that low income folks routinely depend on.)

It is a giant threat to the health of middle/low income people.

It will increase political corruption and the likelihood of election buying. A provision to repeal the long standing Johnson Amendment could “… dramatically increase untraceable political spending and lead to the creation of ‘sham churches’ to take advantage of the new avenue for political spending, which — unlike donations to candidates, msuper PACs’ and party committees — would allow donors to deduct contributions.”

And this is JUST the stuff I’m aware of from listening to TONS of NPR coverage this month, which I then googled to find sources.

Jesus. This is bad.

There is a clause in the Senate bill to grant rights to unborn fetuses

OH MY GOD. From that link:

The language is contained in an innocuous provision related to education savings vehicles — so-called 529 plans, which are state-sponsored, tax-free investment funds that allow families to put aside money for a child’s college education. The provision explicitly allows expectant parents to designate a “child in utero” as a beneficiary of a 529 plan.

Parents have long been able to set up 529 accounts for an unborn child, but the provision accomplishes what anti-abortion activists have long sought: It enshrines into federal law the recognition of the unborn.

They found a way to cram something anti abortion into the FUCKING TAX BILL

Techniquslly it still hasn’t passed because they changed up the bill so it is required to go back to the House. The house is majority Republican but the drastic change and public outcry might be enough to get some republicans to switch votes in the House.

This is fucking evil.

even if it doesn’t pass fully, this has been a stressful weekend on top of everything else that has been going on (net netrality, the slow march toward the same state that germany was in the 30s, crap like that…. on top of my other personal issues.)

Universe, if you can hear me, please, just…. can shit take a break for like a week, or even a few days? Or maybe some news that is as awesome as this is terrifying? I’ll take either if I can’t have both…
