Chris Hedges on America entering the “Trump Phase” of late capitalism
I hope they call it that forever.
I hope five thousand years in the future children in space stations and planetary colonies half a galaxy away learn about the Trump Phase of Capitalism as the keystone argument as to why we don’t do that anymore.
I hope it becomes the new “Mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell.”
It needs to be said that Marx predicted that Communism would be not an alternative to Capitalism, but its successor. Just as Capitalism succeeded Feudalism.
As such, the things we’re seeing today, these desperate attempts to prolong short term profit will be Capitalism’s end. These wrong doings, these obvious signs of abuse and misuse will be the things that give people the need to take control.
The utter and total redistribution of wealth, and reclamation of the means of production from the bourgeois will be infinitely more appealing when nothing is owned except by the super rich. When 1% of the world owns all the houses and 99% pay them to live there, destroying the idea of ownership is more appealing. But when 60% of the population own a house, that’s a harder sell.
Communism, and the transition to socialism will only happen smoothly when everyone agrees to it. And everyone will agree to it when capitalism makes living otherwise, impossible.
