I just came up with an… interesting idea.
We all know, that Elspeth died on Theros. A plane with a legitimate afterlife. Yes, people who die there return as a souless Returned, but … What if the Elspeth’s spark still stays inside of her. Dormant. Waiting for a second ignition. What if, she gets noticed by Erebos, who makes her his champion. Wielding god’s whip, she goes on a mission – deicide Heliod. After a long fight, Elspeth slowly strangles the sunny fucker. When he gives out his last breath, our champion’s Spark awakens. She remembers her former life. She remembers Phyrexia, she remembers Xenagos, most importantly, she remembers Ajani. Her Returned form changes back, into her former, living self. She is back. She is Elspeth, the restored.
