My partner and I received an eviction notice because a church rental assistance program screwed us the fuck over.
On the 1st of June, I went baby to work after my maternity leave. Because of that, my partner was the only one able to contribute to rent at the beginning of this month as my first back-to-work paycheck isn’t until the 15th of this month. We paid $475 on our $947 rent (that’s with the utilities combined except electricity) and went to a rental assistance program through a church in North Dallas.
As soon as I arrived, I stood in line at the window while one of the church employees showed another employee pictures on his phone of fat wheelchair users while saying, “Isn’t it disgusting? And they still get food stamps.” So, obviously these people weren’t wildly concerned with the care of those coming to them for help.
I did the aid interview and they confirmed that they would pay the remainder of the rent and we need merely wait for them to send the check to our apartment complex. Then yesterday, a week after they confirmed their assistance, I get a call from the director of the program. She says she has decided they won’t help us because “You weren’t honest with us about your ~partner~”, in as much of a disgusted, demeaning voice as I’ve heard.
This was patently false; she even stated the interviewer had wrote down that my partner paid half the rent this month. However, she repeated again that “You weren’t honest about your *partner* (with disgusted emphasis on this word each time she said it) so we won’t help you anymore”. Click, and suddenly we don’t have rent and we’ve got an eviction notice.
We’re on the waiting list for another rental assistance place to call us back and see on eligibility but even if we are eligible, it won’t be in time to avoid the eviction process beginning. We’re selling plasma every opportunity available to us but we can only do that twice in a 7 day sitting. If you’re willing to help us out, we’d appreciate it.
